Common Mistakes Of Using Red Light Therapy At Home

It wasn’t until the advent of the past two decades or so that the practice of red light therapy at home was non-existent, and was largely available in spas or health clinics as an esoteric, niche practice reserved for wellness enthusiasts or those in sporting. Now, personal red light therapy devices are commodified all across the market, and have made the treatment more inexpensive and easy for users to adopt.

Unlike many other therapeutic procedures and treatments, red light therapy is non-invasive, safe for daily usage, and has virtually no dangers or side effects. This implies you don't need a skilled specialist to deliver the treatment; you have complete control. However, there are a few faults you can still make while employing RLT individually - the team at Rojo Light Therapy EU dives in!

Commonly Overlooked Factors in Practicing Red Light Therapy At Home

Being inconsistent with your treatment.

The most significant advantage of employing Red Light Therapy At Home is that it can be used on a regular basis without incurring the additional fees associated with professional treatment. However, if you’re not practicing on a consistent basis (we often recommend 3-5 times each week), you could be squandering your investment and prospective benefits.

Wearing clothing or sunblock.

Clothing will filter red and near-infrared radiation from accessing your skin in the same way that it blocks UV rays. Sunscreen is designed to filter or counteract the abuse of UV radiation, but it can also act as a shield to some red and NIR light, restricting it from penetrating as deeply.

Those who wear cosmetics should be aware that many foundations contain SPF. If yours does, you could try red light treatment in the early morning before putting on makeup or after cleaning your face before bed.

Sitting too close or far from your device.

The criteria for how far away you should be from your device are not yet perfected, so it may require some guessing and trial and error on your part - from a clinical perspective, the distance often depends on the intensity of the treatment at hand, with closer proximity prompting a higher density of wavelength reception to the skin. In general, for skin difficulties, sit between 12-36 inches from your device, whereas for deeper tissue issues, sit 6-12 inches away.

Keeping your sessions too short or too long

The general rule is that your sessions should last between 10 and 20 minutes, although you can experiment with other lengths. After all, each body is distinct, and the effects of tailored treatments will differ as a result. You're unlikely to see effects if you limit your sessions to 5 minutes - for those with a high intensity proximity, as an example though, this could be satisfactory.

In terms of longer sessions, you may be tempted to try to squeeze more minutes into a single session or to load a week's worth of sessions into one. While this is not necessarily hazardous, red light treatment does not work in that manner. Hour-long sessions are no more beneficial than 20-minute sessions, and skipping appointments reduces the effectiveness of the treatment.

Using the incorrect red or near-infrared light setting.

Red light and near-infrared (NIR) light have distinct functions. Red light is beneficial for skin conditions, hair growth, and wound healing. On the other hand, NIR penetrates deeper and is mostly utilised to treat pain, muscular repair & rehabilitation, and cognitive wellness, just to mention a few.

With Rojo, Your red light therapy at home has three settings: red, NIR, and dual. You can switch between the two by pressing the 'mode' button. Before you begin your treatment, ensure it is set to the appropriate mode. As a failsafe, using the dual light mode is harmless because it does not reduce the power of any type of light. In fact, there is no danger, and you may even see gains in areas you didn't realise required repair.

Not staying hydrated.

Drinking water throughout the day is generally recommended, but recent research suggests that it may improve the efficiency of red light therapy. Researchers believe that hydrated cells may respond better to red light therapy because they retain more energy. While additional research is needed to discover whether this impacts real-world treatment, it's never a bad thing to grab for that glass of water.

Using the incorrect size device.

Rouge provides red light therapy panels in various sizes to meet broader needs and budgets. To be honest, we believe that everyone should own a Rouge Ultimate because it can handle both major and minor problems.

However, we understand that this is not possible for everyone, and it is not necessary if your primary objective is to recover from arthritic pain in both hands or improve your facial problems. Keep in mind, however, that for full-body illnesses like fibromyalgia or conditions requiring major body regions like reoccurring back pain, a larger panel will give more efficient treatment, allowing you to notice results sooner and spend less time in front of your device.

Not tracking your progress.

Because it is a gradual procedure, the outcomes of red light treatment may surprise you. Assume you're employing a red light treatment to improve your skin's appearance. Given that you gaze in the mirror every day, it may take someone pointing out how glowing you look or asking whether you've had any work done to have you notice your progress.

The same applies to persistent pain. You may not even notice your pain is lessening until one day, you can walk stairs without the aid of a handrail or move a box without flinching.

For cosmetic difficulties, consider taking progress photos. A notebook can help you track progress on unseen conditions like pain or immunological health. Not only will this encourage you to continue your therapy, but it may also be valuable for changing the frequency and duration of your sessions to identify the regimen that works best for you.

The Bottom Line

Oftentimes, there are no serious errors with red light therapy at home. However, minor errors or oversights can have an impact on the efficacy of your treatment. The trick is to recognise them and make the required modifications.

And sometimes, it's just a matter of knowing your body and fine-tuning your sessions to optimise your body's own unique healing capability. With red light therapy, you're in control of your device and your health.
